Stakeholder #1

My first stakeholder is Sarah Lane. She was Natalie Portman's dance double in the movie "BlackSwan," and is the one who started the controversy about whether or not she got enough credit for her role in the movie.

Sarah Lane is not only a ballet dancer on the American Ballet Theatre, but a soloist for them as well. She is vey long and thin, however, not in an anorexic way. Lane has very defined, lean muscles because to be a professional ballet dancer you have to be skinny yet toned. It has taken her twenty-two years of intense training to get her body the way it looks now. Lane is a white, middle-aged dancer with dark brown hair. She is 5’2 and is one of the shortest dancers on her company. The majority of her pictures capture her with her hair in a bun, a tutu around her waist, and pointe shoes on her feet. She moves gracefully and elegantly, even off the stage. By just one look at her you can tell she is a dancer by the way she presents herself. In all of her interviews she sits politely with good posture and dresses conservatively. Her voice is gentle, sweet, and soft. It is obvious she is a reserved and respectful person. However, when she talks about dance you can hear the passion in her voice and know she will do whatever it takes to stand up for her art form.

  • "I've been doing this for 22 years, and to say that someone trained for a year and a half and did what I did is degrading not only to me but to the entire ballet world.” – Sarah Lane. Found here
  • “They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar..” – Sarah Lane. Found here.
  • "Of the full body shots, I would say 5 percent are Natalie. All the other shots are me.”– Sarah Lane. Found here

These quotes are very valid because they are said by Sarah Lane herself. She is the one involved in the controversy and is directly affected by it. However, the third quote may not be accurate. That is an estimate by Lane of how much dancing she thought Natalie Portman did in the movie. It is her opinion and may not be completely factual. Lane definitely plays with emotions during her claims. She makes herself the victim and wants her audience to sympathize for her.

4.

Sarah Lane's claims are similar to those of Wendy Perron's since they both come from the dance community. They make claims to defend the artistry of dance. Neither of them want the demanding effort it takes to become a professional dancer to be downgraded and made seem like it's easy. Lane has the least in common with Natalie Portman and her movie crew's claims. They say that Portman did most of the dancing in the movie, while Lane believes she, herself danced more.
