1 . What purpose(s) does this genre usually serve?

Quick reference guides are available for easy access to information. They give detailed descriptions about issues, news, or specific subjects. The information given is in a format that enables the reader to skim through it, if they would like, and only read the parts they are interested in.

2.  Where, how, or in what context do readers usually find this genre?

This genre is an online written text or blog. It is found mainly in news articles.

3. Who is the typical audience for this genre?

The audience for this genre is anyone who is interested in the topic and has access to a computer and the internet. That being said, I would say the typical audience are adults who like to be informed about modern information and controversies.

 4. What are some of the key features or characteristics that are unique to this genre, distinguishing it from other texts?

Quick reference guides are unique because they hold immense amounts of information that are easy to read. They include many images, graphs, and even videos to make the reading more comprehendible and enjoyable. They also give the reader options to view other related articles that could be of interest to the reader. Other unique features include the ability to share the article on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and the ability to make changes to the article whenever necessary.

5. Based on your answers to the questions above, come up with a definition in your own words for this genre.

Quick reference guides are modern, online articles that condense information into an easy to read format.

Reflection:

I read and commented on PJ's and Tim's posts. After hearing my peers explain the genres, I have a better understanding of them and feel more comfortable using them for projects. Tim was very informative about Podcasts and it made me realize that music is a form of a podcast as well, which I found very interesting. PJ also wrote about Quick Reference Guides, like me, and our answers were similar, so I feel confident knowing that I truly have an understanding of this genre. I am not as nervous as I was about the projects and am actually excited to get started on them.

  1. Emily, this post was definitely informative on quick reference guides. This was the first time that quick reference guides had been described to me, and this post gave a well thought out description. Quick reference guides seem to be made for those looking for a quick overview of a subject so I absolutely agree with you. One piece of advice that I would give you is to expand on your ideas more if you can. You definitely get your point across, but I think it could be done in an even better way if you expanded these answers more. Overall, this was a great article and I can not wait to see what else you post.

  2. I've never heard the term quick reference guide (QRG) used in this context before, for news articles and such. This is the first time working with it in college, that's for sure. Turns out I've been reading QRGs since I knew how to surf the internet! One thing I would say, though, is that the use of QRGs lend themselves more to author bias, or at least the bias is a bit harder to detect since we have no interaction with the author, besides that of their text. Bias isn't wrong, nor is it bad, but I feel it's more prevalent in all text/print applications, which can be misconstrued as absolute fact. Even peer review articles show bias, especially in research if it involves justification for money on expenditures. I'd say that is another thing that separates QRGs from other genres. All in all, smart and intelligent post. I look forward to the rest of the semester!

  3. Note on conventions of the blog post genre: Revisit Step 1.5 from "Deadline 1" to re-familiarize yourself with the conventions of blogging. You're missing one item on the bulleted list of conventions there.
