Twitter and What I Found There

There are many different routes dance majors can take. Some join dance companies, such as American Ballet Theatre or Hubbard Street, some do commercial dancing and work in LA, and others move to New York to try Broadway. One of the twitter feeds I researched focused on dance companies, while the other feed focused more on commercial dance.

1. What kinds of things do people on Twitter seem to be talking about, debating, arguing about or otherwise engaging in meaningful exchanges of ideas about? Give us a descriptive and clear sense of the kinds of stories you're seeing in these Twitter feeds.

·      The majority of the tweets I researched about dance contained links to articles. The articles were about modern dance companies, reviews of their shows, and current dance events and competitions that are happening around the world, such as the Dance Awards. The twitter feeds also included many pictures and videos of famous dancers and tips on how to improve.

2. In your opinion, what are the two most interesting conversations or stories you found in the Twitter feeds? Hyperlink us to the two different Twitter feeds and explain why you found those conversations interesting.

·      I came across Dance Spirit Magazine’s Twitter and became really interested in their feed. They focus more on the commercial side of dance. I enjoyed how they included videos of current dancers and a “Photo of the Day” almost everyday. My favorite story from their feed was the “Our tips on how to keep improving, evenif you're the best in class,” article. I found it inspiring because it talked about how to have confidence yet be gracious at the same time and how to push yourself past your limit.

·      I also enjoyed the Dance Tabs twitter feed. Their main focus is on ballet and dance companies around the world. My favorite part about their twitter is how they have show reviews of different dance companies. For example, they include a review of San Francisco Ballet’s Opening Night Gala. It is important for dancers to stay informed of the current dance companies in the world and what critics and viewers think of them.

3. Overall, what impression do you get of your discipline based on what you saw happening on Twitter? Were the people in these feeds talking in ways you expected or did not expect, about things you anticipated they'd be talking about or things you had no idea they'd be discussing? Explain in concise specific detail.

·      I was not surprised by anything the twitter feeds were talking about. Dance is a competitive and difficult profession to join and people are always trying to be the best in the field. That is why knowledge of the dance world is important. You have to be aware of your competition and also what your audience is expecting.
